Serra da Bocaina in Rio de Janeiro Brazil

The Parque Nacional Serra da Bocaina (Bocaina Mountains National Park) is located about 250 kilometers (160 miles) SW of Rio, on highway BR 116. It was created in 1971 and its whole area is over 100,000 ha, comprehending the states of Rio (60%) and São Paulo (40%), where the headquarters is located.

It's part of the remmaining Atlantic Forest and has many different species of birds and mammals, as well as exotic plants and trees.

The tropical weather has an average annual temperature running about 21ºC (65ºF), but it can drop down to nearly 0º C (32º F) in winter, as easy as it can go up to high 30ºC (100ºF) in summer.
Its peaks and hills can vary from 800 to 2.000 meters of altitude (2.400 to 6.000 feet), and are one of the park's main attractions.

And besides the amazing waterfalls, such as Cachoeira do Paredão, Santo Izidro and Posses, we'll find the park's most curious attraction: The Gold Path. This stoned trail was built by slaves in 1725, during Brazil's colonial period, in order to transport the gold from Minas Gerais state to the city of Paraty, where it was shipped to Portugal.

Nowadays, part of this trail is mainly used for trekking and mountain biking, by travelers from all over the world.
